5 I.T. Mistakes Quietly Costing Columbus Small Businesses

By Peter Gatas

Most I.T. problems don’t start as emergencies. They start as small gaps that nobody has time to look at, until the day they take you offline. After nearly 15 years working in technology, I’ve watched the same handful of mistakes quietly cost small businesses across Columbus and Central Ohio far more than good I.T. ever would.

Here are the five I see most often.

1. Assuming Microsoft 365 backs up your data

It doesn’t, at least not the way most people think. If an employee deletes a folder or an account is compromised, that data can be gone for good. Microsoft protects their infrastructure; protecting your content is on you. A proper Microsoft 365 backup is inexpensive and saves the kind of day that otherwise ends a business.

2. Treating cybersecurity as a one-time purchase

Buying antivirus once and forgetting it is not a security strategy. Attackers get in through unpatched devices, weak logins, and missing multi-factor authentication far more often than through some sophisticated hack. The fix is unglamorous: keep everything updated, turn on MFA everywhere, and encrypt your devices.

3. Letting “the person who’s good with computers” run I.T.

Every small business has one. They mean well, but it isn’t their job, and the gaps add up: no patching schedule, no offboarding process, no monitoring. When they’re busy or on vacation, your I.T. simply stops.

4. Locking into a long, bloated MSP contract

Plenty of providers will happily sign you to a multi-year retainer for services you don’t use. You end up paying for shelfware and waiting in a ticket queue. You should only pay for the time and work you actually need.

5. Being reactive instead of proactive

The most expensive I.T. is the kind you only call when something breaks. By then you’re paying for downtime and the fix. Monitoring, patching, and a little planning prevent most issues before anyone notices them.

The common thread

Every one of these is a gap left by no one owning your I.T. That’s exactly the problem Veritas was built to solve, with direct access to a senior engineer, honest advice, and no long-term contracts.
